Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Does couples counseling work?
A: No therapist can guarantee particular results to a client. However, I only use methods that have been confirmed by research to be effective with real couples. Ninety percent of couples in my practice report a significant improvement in the level of satisfaction in their relationships after three months of treatment.

Q: Will you tell us whether to stay together or break up?
A: I will teach you communication tools and help you get a sense of the potential of your relationship so that you can decide. It is never my role to tell you whether to stay together or break up, because I know you are the only ones who have the right answer.

Q: What if my partner doesn’t want to come in for counseling?
A: A lot of times one person in the relationship is more motivated or ready for couples counseling. Sometimes it helps to talk to your partner and clear up some of their fears about or misconceptions about how counseling works. For example, in sessions with me, no one is shamed or blamed for the problems you’re facing, and it isn’t always necessary to delve into your childhoods. If your partner still doesn’t want to come in, you can enter therapy with me by yourself. One person making changes can have a huge impact. Sometimes one partner starts, and the other joins later.

Q: How long does therapy take?
A:That depends on a few things. If you are motivated, willing to practice the skills you learn in between sessions, and give me feedback about what is most and least helpful in each session, improvements in your relationship will happen more quickly. We need to talk about your particular situation for me to give you an impression of how long it might take to get the results you want.

Q: Do you also see individuals?
A: I work with many individuals. In addition to Relationship Therapy, I specialize in helping people increase self-confidence and decrease anxiety.
